Ashdod

Ashdod (Hebrew אשדוד, Arabic إسدود ʾ Isdūd) second port of Israel (after Haifa). is the fifth largest city in Israel to 35 km from Tel Aviv, Ashkelon 5 km and 70 km from Jerusalem and Beer Sheva. very dynamic city with a very rapid recent growth, including through the provision of new immigrants from France, Ethiopia, Russia and Latin America.

  



 
The city is one of five cities founded by the Philistines in ancient times and was the center of worship of the god Dagon. According to the Bible is in Ashdod that the Philistines took the Ark of the Covenant as a trophy in honor of Dagon, after a victory against the Hebrews Aphek around -1050. The story mentions Ashdod major disasters due to the presence of the Ark to be transferred to Gath and returned to the tribes of Israel.

In 1956, the modern city of Ashdod was built on the ruins of the ancient Philistine city and the village of Isdud, destroyed during the Palestine War of 1948. The majority of Arab residents of the village became Palestinian refugees. The city was inhabited before 4620 in 1945 by Arab and 290 Jewish.

The city of Ashdod is one of the few deep water ports on the Mediterranean Sea. It became an important center for the Israeli and international navigation. Some 15 million tonnes of cargo per year spend annually Ashdod.

The city itself is divided administratively into 17 districts. The growth of this city is the largest since the 1990s and the immigration of many Jews in the Diaspora. The city in 2005 over 200,000 inhabitants.
